How to grow peonies successfully /September 13th 2025
I’ve been growing peonies for over 30 years and it all started with a small landscape design I installed in my Beaverdale home. It was a real postage-sized yard but they were very important to include in the design. (yes …I do design work too!)
Fast forward to today and I’m a grower of specialty cut flowers and a big part of my business is peonies. I grow flowers at two locations. I grow at a micro-farm in Des Moines ( in a residential landscape design) and my larger farm in Boone County. I have peonies that my grandmother grew at her farm and and has been gone since 1976.
Join me at the Micro-Farm in Des Moines on Saturday 9/13 from noon to 2 to learn all about growing peony in the landscape. We will take a little “walk about” my property so you can see some other crops we are growing in the city and I’ll share how I use what we grow. Growing a peony is so much more than digging a hole and plopping in a root. During this class you will learn about disease management, fertilization, how to site your peony correctly, preparing your planting area , the history of peonies, digging and splitting, etc. If I have a spot open in the garden I'll show you how to plant a peony.
Each registrant will receive my packet on how to plant, cut, grow, fertilize and store cut peonies for extended use. I’ll also cover disease in peony and how to find treatment information. I’ll talk about the varieties we grow. I’ll also share tips and tricks on how to store your peonies in your refrigerator for later use. Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase our fall peony roots before I open it up to the public.
We respectively ask that you do not bring young children or dogs to this workshop. Please wear appropriate footwear to walk around. We do not have public restroom facilities but there is a McDonalds right around the corner. I will cap this class at 15 registrants and need 10 people to teach this class. No refunds after purchased.
